2016 FBLA RLC: BY NADIA LARTEY
It’s that time of year again y’all! On Friday, December 16th, Penn Wood High School’s Future Business Leaders of America headed off to their annual Regional Leadership Conference. Widener University so graciously hosted Region 19’s RLC. This year’s RLC was extremely meaningful to PW, as it was helped run and coordinated by PW’s very own Nia Lartey, Secretary of Region 19.
Even though it was a bit of a chilly day, it was still a blast! The morning started off with lunch in Widener’s Cafeteria. There was a salad bar, a pasta station, pizza, a Vegetarian/Vegan section, and of course, desert! After lunch, all the schools in Region 19 headed to Alumni Auditorium to hear from the Region 19 President, Representatives from Widener, and candidates for region office for the 2017-2018 School year.
After the little opening ceremony it was time for the workshops! Penn Wood was in the Red Group, meaning that we were with Chi Chester High School and Garnet Valley. Students from each of the three schools were randomly split into groups for a balloon tower building challenge! Students had five minutes to build the tallest freestanding balloon tower they could possibly build with a pack of seventy-two balloons and some tape. Each group was allowed to send one student representative to go negotiate for more time however. An important and valuable lesson was learned from the experience: sometimes in life, particularly in the entrepreneurial world, you’re forced to work with limited materials in circumstances that are out of your control; you may not be able to choose who you work with or the supplies you have; but that does not have to stop you from being successful.
After building balloon towers, we went to a “Navigating the Admissions Process” Workshop. It was very informative, particularly for the underclassmen that attended. We were given general information about test scores, applying to colleges, essays, recommendation letters, and finding the best “fit” when looking for a college or university.
Then it was time for Awards! Penn Wood had a strong showing this year. We had competitors in Advertising, Journalism, Help Desk, Global Business, Digital Video Production, Impromptu Speaking, and both Public Speaking I and Public Speaking II, with four members of our chapter placing. Nia Lartey Placed Second in Journalism, making this her third time qualifying for States, and Nadia Lartey placed First in Help Desk, also making her a State Qualifier. Charlene Canning placed second in Public Speaking I and Oyelola Dia placed third in Public Speaking II. Nia Lartey was also reelected as Region Secretary for the 2017-2018 School Year.
Congrats to all members of PWHS FBLA for your participation in this season! And Good Luck to this year’s State Qualifiers!
